Sprawl’s Quest RPG Released!

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times. I’m not sure why stories start this way, if it were good times, who would need a savior? So yeah, it was the worst of times.

Our story starts with Sprawl (this is you). Today is your 18th birthday, and off to go to becoming an adult. But unknown to you, trouble is brewing beyond your village walls. And as you venture out, it will be up to you to save the world.

Are you ready to be a hero in this classic turn-based RPG?

Today, I released Sprawl’s Quest over on Game Jolt, the first and (most likely) only release of an unfinished roleplaying game that I started roughly two years ago. As any game developer can tell you, releasing a game, even a simple one, is a LOT of work. Everything from writing the story, coding the engine, creating the graphic assets (thanks Bif!), scripting the interactions, working out the bugs, etc. etc. takes a lot of work.

All the same, working on Sprawl’s Quest was a great experience, and if nothing else, helped me to learn the Ruby scripting language and RGSS3 framework. Nonetheless, it was time to officially put this project to bed and release what I’ve completed to the world.

Sprawl’s Quest is a throwback to the old 16-bit turn-based RPG games and is playable on just about any Windows-based PC. The game is best played with at least a four button controller (like an XBox controller) and contains about 12-15 hours of content. During this time, visit fantasy versions of places from my childhood, relive inside jokes that only a few close friends of mine might get, adventure alongside 16-bit versions of people that I’ve met online, and say hi to my late kitty Dewie who is patiently waiting to be fed in the Starter Village of Burke.

I hope Sprawl’s Quest is enjoyable for some of my friends and family (and maybe one random dude in Asia), and if not, well I had a blast reliving the memories. Please download and enjoy this free game!
