It’s been a while since I have toyed with Apps, mostly because I have a day job and such. Recently, I decided that I would create a game. What kind of game? I wasn’t sure, but knowing me, it was going to be some type of RPG for my Windows 8 Tablet.
Everyone from my generation remembers the old school Final Fantasy Role playing games. I’m pretty sure many of you specifically remember Cloud from FFVII and (spoiler alert) the death of Aeris. While I don’t have the graphical skill to make a game on par with Final Fantasy VII, I thought I’d try my hand at something more like an earlier 16-bit version.
Knowing that you don’t invent the wheel, I searched around for other projects of people that have built RPGs until I found a good framework. Don’t let it fool you though, this “framework” is far from a complete game. Using an underlining Ruby Scripting engine, the flexibility is there to make some pretty amazing things.
So for the last couple of months, I’ve been working on what I’ve tentatively been calling “Sprawl’s Quest”, although I suppose the name could change. The story starts with Sprawl. This is you. It is your 18th birthday, and so you leave your home to head off to the Adventurer’s School for Future Heroes (aka college) to choose a player class. Unlike your normal college, of course, you get to “major” in being a Warrior, Mage, or Thief.
The story continues to unfold as you travel the land and meet old friends throughout my online gaming history. Many members of Z make guest appearances in some form or fashion.
The game will most likely be released by the end of the year and will include 25 playable levels, 4 major boss battles, and couple dozen explorable dungeons full of loot. There will be 10 playable characters, 3 player classes, and 2 forms of crafting. The game will be created with Windows 8 in mind, but will be compatible with any Windows-based PC.
While we know the hero to be Sprawl, our protagonist will remain a mystery until you play the game.
Stay tuned for a beta…
