While Whipped is clearly my most popular zApp, Demotivate is perhaps the most challenging to create and maintain. This zApp may seem simple enough, but like every other Demotivational App on the iTunes store, getting the aspect ratio, cropping, and scaling correctly is a huge challenge. That is where HTML5 and Canvas come into play. No more fancy Javascript required. You create the equivalent to a div tag for your canvas, then start painting on it like it is Photoshop. I still had to do some fancy stuff on the scripting side of things to calculate the size of images captured by the camera and scale it down, but the end result is a very smooth looking photo.
Due out next week is the HD version of this App, which will be my first official App for cash. It will increase the resolution for Retina support, as well as provide a few other features that I am still working on at this time (like manual cropping adjustments and resizing if you don’t like my automated algorithms). Don’t worry, this version will always be free, but some of the cooler features won’t be implemented, and you will always have the zSprawl.com watermark on your pictures. Such is business!
Here are the notes for the 2.4 update:
- General Support for “The New iPad”.
- Improved Apple iOS look and feel.
- Color selection added to change font and border colors.
Head on over to the iTunes store and download the Demotivate zApp today!!
